New Year 7/8 Girls' In2Hockey League big success
Tonight saw the final rounds of the inaugral Year 7/8 Girls In2Hockey, 6-a-side, Central Venue League (CVL). This is the first secondary hockey competition to have taken place with Gateshead Secondary schools for more than 4 years.
In2Hockey is a version of hockey for 10 to 14 year olds. It is a refreshed, refocused and rebranded game, which replaces the game previously known as Mini Hockey.
A visit from 2 British Olympic hockey players, George Pinner and Adam Dixon, prior to the start of this CVL helped to inspire players and schools across the borough. On the back of this visit we gave Year 7/8 girls the chance to try In2Hockey, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.
The Year 7/8 Girls In2Hockey CVL took place over 3 consecutive weeks at Cardinal Hume and Whickham School and Sports College. The programme provided an element of coaching in order to refresh/increase the knowledge of teachers as well as increasing/improving the repertoire of skills and general match play of the players.
The CVL has been a huge success with 5 secondary schools involved in the programme and 6 teams in the league. The improvement in both skill and match play was very noticeable over the 3 week period of the CVL.
Tonight's games saw a head to head between the top 2 teams, St Thomas More 2 and Cardinal Hume. They played each other in their final CVL game and being equal on points they knew that whoever won this game would be victorious in the league. A closely competitive game saw Cardinal Hume win quite convincingly and take the Gold Medal place with St Thomas More 2 settling for the Silver.
The Respect Award was presented to Charles Thorp who were very deserving winners.
