London 2012 Opening Ceremony
A group of Gateshead students were lucky enough to be chosen to form a prestigeous Guard of Honour at the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. As the eyes of the world looked on, the eight year 9 students from Whickham School & Sports College lined the route into the Olympic Stadium as over 10,000 athletes made their way into the arena.
Whickham School was one of only 200 schools in the UK that was invited to take part in the parade, having demonstrated a commitment to living out the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Each school was allocated a country (other than Team GB) to support and make the athletes feel welcome in London. Whickham were allocated Egypt and the attached picture shows the pupils proudly displaying the banner they created (with help from the art department).
One of the chosen pupils (Kiera Iveson, 14) said: "Being chosen to take part has been amazing and a once in a lifetime oportunity that will stay with me for the rest of my life". A full selection of pictures can be viewed within the Media Vault.
