Netball HIgh 5 County School Games Qualifiers underway
This term's High 5 Netball tournaments (mixed) are happening at an exciting time for England Netball. The have recently completed an historic three consecutive victories against the reigning world champions Australia - the first time ever for England. Before the series, England had only beaten the Diamonds twice in their histories.
More people are getting on the netball court than ever before - not just in schools, but in clubs and at universities. England Captain, Pamela Cookie, told BBC Sport 'the more competition we have for our players, makes us play better".
The England Captain's philosophy certainly held true in the Gateshead area/cluster tournaments. All players and teams, without exception, improved their play as the tournaments progressed. Some very exciting games, results and much raw talent has been on display. One of the most pleasing aspects of all tournaments is the manner in which the games were played and the respect shown by all players to everyone.
If these tournaments are anything to go be it looks like it is going to be a tightly fought finals at the beginning of March.
All the area Year 5/6 Netball High 5 tournaments are now completed and 6 teams have won the right to their place in this year's Gateshead Finals.
Thomas Hepburn and St Thomas More clusters organised their own cluster events and we a further 3 tournaments have taken place at Gateshead Leisure Centre, Charles Thorp School and Gateshead international Stadium over the last 2 weeks. The schools progressing to the Gateshead Finals are as follows:
- Carr Hill (Thomas Hepburn tournament)
- Barley Mow (Gateshead Leisure Centre tournament)
- Whickham St Mary's (St Thomas More tournament)
