Gateshead Pupils Achieve Indoor Rowing Success

A series of competitive indoor rowing events have taken place this year, identifying a wealth of talented Gateshead pupils.  The first event of the series, the Gateshead Indoor Rowing Championships took place on Wednesday 27th January at Cardinal Hume School.  The event, which lasted a full day provided the opportunity for approximately 250 (years 7-13) to compete (pictured below)

Following this event the first ever Gateshead Indoor Rowing representative squad was selected to compete in a Tyne & Wear Final which took place at Benfield School on Thursday 11th February 2010.  The squad did Gateshead proud, dominating many of the races and topping the medals table (pictured below).

Following the county finals, 22 Gateshead pupils were identified to represent Tyne & Wear as part of a 40 strong county squad.  The final step in this series of events saw pupils compete at the North East Regional Finals on Tuesday 2nd March at Maiden Castle, Durham University.

The overall standard of competition at this event was extremely high with many experienced rowers involved, some of whom had represented Great Britain.  Despite the tough odds and a limited history in the sport when compared with some of the other counties, the Tyne & Wear squad (pictured) held their own and more.  They eventually brought home 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals as well finishing 2nd, 1st and 1st in the Year 7,8 & 9 relays respectively.

The majority of these medals were acquired by the Gateshead contingent (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze).  Well done to all involved, a fantastic achievement!
