Year 5 Playground Leader Training
We were back at Gateshead Stadium on Thursday, joined by groups of year 5 students from 8 schools. These students had been selected by their teachers to take part in our Playground Leader training event in order to learn the necessary leadership skills and game ideas to take back to their school and put into practice on the yard.
The training day started with a presentation, where all school groups were briefed on leadership qualities and discussed what they thought a good leader should be. Next, the pupils were introduced to the STEP acronym:
S - Space
T - Time/Task
E - Equipment
P - People
The pupils were taught about how changing the STEP factors within their playground games can make their games more adaptable and how, as playground leaders, they could change their games to alter the difficulty and adapt to different circumstances.
Their learning was then put into practice as groups travelled around 8 different stations around the sportshall, each set up with an easy playground game they could take back to school and play. As well as learning and playing the games, the Year 5s used the STEP acronym to change elements of the game, making the games easier, harder and more inclusive.
All of our playground leaders were confident and knowledgable, giving excellent answers and adapting to any changes within their games. Well done to all those involved!
