#INSPIRE Virtual Torch Relay 2024

Our 2024 #INSPIRE Torch Relay started at the beginning of June and saw 26 Gateshead schools and over 6,000 children come together to celebrate community and Olympic spirit by taking a leg of the relay!

Each participating school hosted the #INSPIRE Torch for one day, as it travelled around Gateshead. On their Torch Days, schools celebrated in many different ways, including physical activity challenges, dances, running relays and learning about the Olympic Torch Relay. As well as this, schools submitted entries into a "Torch Design Competition" and also submitted applications to become a Torch Bearer within their school.

After visiting all schools, the Torch was carried into Gateshead International Stadium on Friday 28th June as part of the march-on parade to signify the start of the #INSPIRE Gateshead Primary Schools Athletics Festival 2024. The Torch was held high by torch bearers from the final schools on the relay route as it made it's way onto the track.

The #INSPIRE Torch Relay certainly raised Olympic spirit ahead of the Paris 2024 Games and was a huge success for those involved! We hope to continue to commit to this project a part of a legacy and already have our sights set on LA 2028!

Change4Life (C4L)

Change 4 Life (C4L) was launched over 10 years ago as a government initiative to get more children active and to lead healthy lifestyles through fun activities and healthy eating.

C4L Festivals and Clubs are designed to encourage children who wouldn't usually take part in sport or physical activity to get involved, promoting and teaching children about the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle through the opportunity to try new activities.

C4L Clubs involve meeting before/after school or during breaks and lunchtimes to partake in fun and healthy activities. Activity cards and resources can be circulated with schools and include lots of fun and adaptable games that are easy to set up and take part in. These games and activities aim to develop teamwork, physical skills and creativity!

Leadership League

Leadership League is our virtual leadership offer, aimed at year 7-13 students. It involves a team of leaders taking part in challenges to be top of the leaderboard.

The Leadership League Training Workshop will take your Sports Leaders through their training step-by-step. An action plan and evaluation at the end of the workshop will allow pupils to reflect on the new skills they have learnt before putting them into practice.

The enhanced leadership league will form a Gateshad-wide leaderboard where school leadership teams will earn points by completing set challenges. The menu of challenges is available to all participating schools and can be completed as and when is apporopriate. Submission should be supported by a challenge checklist as well as including any evidence.

Be Your Best Ftiness Challenge

Our 'Be Your Best' Fantastic Four Fitness Challenges are designed for Years 7, 8 and 9. The challenges involve 5 exercise circuits that can be completed during PE lessons in groups of 4.

The challenges focus on different workout/fitness movements such as burpees, squats, crunches, press ups ect. Circuits are time-based challenges where teams record the highest number of "reps" completed within a set time.

School's scorecards are submitted and entered into a Gateshead-wide competiton with seperate winners from each year group (7,8 & 9) for both boys and girls.

School Sport Organising Crew

A School Sport Organising Crew (SSOC) is a diverse group of young people that join together to develop, organise and promote PE, School Sport and Intra-school competition. Ultimately, establishing an SSOC is about young people organising and developing the School Sport & Physical Activity in schools, within which young people are empowered to lead change.

SSOC's consist of 10 (maximum) year 5/6 pupils that demonstrate the qualities of good sports leaders.

SSOCs take part in different games and activities to get them thinking about the current sport offer in their school and how they can achieve their goal of ensuring 'EVERY child in their school takes part in 30 minutes of physical activity every day.' At the end of the workshop, SSOC's then work on their Action Plan to achieve this goal back at school.

WinterRUNderland

Every Christmas Eve, Santa Claus travels around the globe to deliver presents to all of the worlds' children. Of course he doesn't do this alone and relies on his trusty reindeer to help him. They get tired quickly and need plenty of carrots to give them energy. This is where your class comes in...

Winter RUNderland is a Christmas themed, physical activity challenge that can be tailored to suit almost any primary age group. The activity is a completely flexible class challenge and is something that the whole school can get involved with.

The more physical activity a class can do, the more carrots they'll earn to feed the reindeer and help them on their journey. For each minute of physical activity a class completes, they'll earn 1 carrot. They need to earn a total of 300 carrots throuhout December to ensure Santa and his reindeer have enough carrots to make it all the way around the world this Christmas Eve.

Progess can be tracked and recorded through our printable or digital resources as well as school leaderboards being published on our social media pages.
